Psychology and Computers

Psychology and computers are interwoven in a variety of ways. Technology has a profound impact on how psychological research and treatment is carried out. In fact, psychologists can now reach a broader population and provide services in more efficient ways. This is particularly applicable during times of pandemics like the recent Covid-19 outbreak, since digital technology has provided the opportunity for patients to receive treatment from a distance.

Computers have a long history in the study of human psychology. They started by introducing and the use of magnetic resonance imaging scanners (MRIs) and electroencephalogram machines that enabled scientists to take pictures of the brain during psychological tests. Computers also allow to store and analyse huge amounts of information, helping to make more accurate and replicable research.

Computer-aided design also allows researchers to create sophisticated mental models. These models can be tested in different situations to see how they respond. This is a step up from traditional methods for collecting psychological data, such as self report questionnaires or interviews. They only cover only a portion of the subject at any given moment and require subjects be encouraged to participate.

In the current era computer science and psychology have become interwoven. Therefore, students of psychology are well placed to contribute to the development of technology that will shape our future. This is particularly true because our relationship with technology is always evolving. New tools to measure and assess are constantly being developed. Interdisciplinary collaboration is becoming more and more crucial in the development of these programs and in understanding the impact it has on people. This is evident in our degree programme, which comprises core psychology and computing modules, as well as a strand of design-related courses that are shared.
